Candlelight Dinner for Two
I was begging my brother Carlo for a gift this Christmas and he said he already prepared one for me. I was surprised when I arrived home seeing a small dining table for two all set and adorned with paper flowers made by Tobbie. The table was nestled in a corner of our living room. Instead of a menu card stands a Christmas card with Carlo’s warm greetings. At the center of the table was a candle and it really burnt beautifully because of the fine glitters mixed in its wax. When I asked him where he bought the candle and I am planning to buy one, he said “That candle is yours. I got it from your room. Mom said you’ll be happy to use it instead of just keeping it forever there. Hehehe!”
To match the Quoizel lighting, he played good instrumental music in the background.
He prepared a four-course meal for Marlon and me. The starters were garlic bread and special cream of mushroom soup. The main course was Carlo’s signature steak in gravy and broccoli. The dessert was his own version of banana split. He really planned everything beforehand. Although the dishes were quite simple, it was really amazing that he was able to put this all together.
It has been an evening of good food and fun dining!

Dinner at Red Kimono 30112008
We had a sumptuous dinner last Sunday with our good friends Chester, Pong and Susan. It was an eat-all-you-can at Red Kimono, a Japanese restaurant located near Tiendesitas. The food was great and it was worth the price.
After dinner, we walked on the streets chatting about different business opportunities. It was quite late and all the shops started to close. I felt full and sleepy and cannot concentrate on what they are talking about – businesses, recession and even the latest gossips. All I’m noticing was the great outdoor lighting along the streets. I want to make sure my house would have these as well. The house should be glowing with beauty not only during the day but also at night, especially during the holiday season which is just around the corner.
After a couple more minutes, we each decided to go home and rest because another long working day is ahead.
Kani Salad Recipe
My first try was not as successful as I want it to be. The sliced cucumber was watery so I was not satisfied. I tried to research for a recipe and I saw that you can add carrots and mango as ingredients. My second try of Kani salad was way better than the first one. I put the sliced cucumber in an absorbent tissue paper to lessen the juice. The mango was a great additive.
You also need to find a shredder for the cucumber. I haven’t found any yet so it took me hours (literally) to slice the cucumber in very thin strips similar to that of Teriyaki’s.
I also tried the Kani salad of Something Fishy but it is way too expensive (P250.00) than T. Boy’s (P125.00). Also, the main ingredient of Something Fishy’s Kani Salad is carrot instead of cucumber. I didn’t try Zuppa’s version of Kani Salad because I saw that the dressing was wasabi sauce and not Japanese mayo. I don’t know how it will taste but I hate wasabi so I scrapped the option of trying it.
Anyway, to make your own Kani Salad, you will need:
- 1 cucumber, shredded/cut into strips
- Kani sticks (Crab sticks), shredded
- Crab eggs (optional but will really make your salad more tasty)
- 1 ripe mango, shredded (optional)
- 1 carrot, shredded (optional)
- Japanese mayonnaise -> my favorite, also known as Kewpie mayo
- 1/2 tbsp. sesame oil (optional)
- 1 lettuce leaf
Use a grater or a vegetable peeler to shred the cucumber, carrots and mango. For the crab sticks, you can just pull them apart into thin strips. Put all these on top of a lettuce leaf on a good plate or bowl. Top it with Japanese mayo and drizzle with the crab eggs and sesame oil.
