Offsite Data Storage, Backup

Companies nowadays invest heavily in solutions for business continuity whenever untoward incidents happen. Such events include flooding, earthquake, fire and other happenings that could cause damage to the company’s operations.

The common processes or methods that are taken into consideration are Business Continuity Plan (BCP) and Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP). The former involves creation of logistical plan concerning how the organization will restore its critical functions at the quickest time possible after a disruption in service. The BCP focuses on non-IT related items such as crisis communication, facilities, etc, while the DRP concerns more on the IT infrastructure, which in one way or another relates to server and network setup, online backup, and other application and infrastructure concerns.

One aspect that companies consider is having an offsite data storage or backup. This way, whenever a drastic damage happens on one site or building, the organization can still continue its operations with the help of the offsite data backup. These data can be restored fully and cause the business to function normally. This concept however is only a minor subset of the whole disaster recovery plans. There are other things to consider such as infrastructure design, backup, redundancy, and a lot more.

For personal use, there are sites offering offsite data storage or backup. Such services categorizes its client based on the requirements – from low data storage requirements (less than 50GB) to enterprise scale data storage needs, which reaches terabytes in size.
