Two Nights at Riverfront

Before leaving for Australia, my grandmother, aunt and uncles spent two nights in the condominium unit (or a flat as my uncle Dan wants to call it) we recently sold. I was amazed when we visited just weeks after turning over the bare unit. The place was amazing. It’s complete with sofa, beds, air conditioner, dining set and kitchen appliances. Perhaps the buyer got a good deal at a local discount furniture shop.

I joined my relatives for dinner when they arrived in Manila and the night before they left the country. Mamang was very eager to share her secret recipes to me and we had a few chit-chats an alas, I promised to visit them one day in Australia.

I volunteered to cook rice on their first night and to our dismay, it was like a rice soup. Papa and Uncle Ebot teased me and said that I am not used to cooking. Well, it was a long time since I used a rice cooker because my friend Chester said the aluminium used in rice cookers is not good for the health. It is believed to cause Alzheimer’s disease.

Uncle Dan also teased me and is giving me lessons repeatedly and I said “Oh yeah, I just used that rule of thumb you mentioned, I put 2 cups of water to the 2 cups of rice.” Who cares? Even the Care Bears don’t care. We were hungry that night so we didn’t notice we almost ate up all of the so-soft rice.

Christmas Party 2008

Another Christmas party had passed and it was one heck of entertainment for us. Good foods were laid on three tables and one of these is my favorite – the desserts table.

After having lunch, all of us headed to the driveway to join the games that promised huge amount of prizes.

Some of the games included Straw Relay, Break the Pot, Lipstick Game, Newspaper Dance and Calamansi Relay and Polvoron-Eating Contest. For the ‘Pop the Balloon’, each one can grab a balloon and once you pop it, you’ll find a play money which you can exchange for its real value. If you’re lucky, you can get a thousand pesos. Guess the Prize is also exciting and you have to mix luck and instinct to guess the amount inside the bottles. Seven bottles were available for guessing. Each bottle has been filled with coins and paper bills. Mom got the grand prize wherein her guess of P2,385.00 was the closest amount. It’s actually P2,400.50. I was going to say that same figure as well but Carlo insisted that it was P2,900+ because year 2009 is coming and this led me to put a wrong amount. Anyway, she can use the winnings to purchase a Samsonite luggage before her trip back to Japan. Mama B bagged the prize for dancing the “Igiling Giling” and she made the audience laugh heartily while she dances. The climax of the party was the Flour Blowing Game and Carlo joined this game. They have to blow a basin of flour and the first team to empty the basin will win.
